Balance Sheet Quiz Answers & Explanations
Question 1: C. Assets, Liabilities & Equity
A Balance Sheet shows a business's financial position by summarizing its Assets, Liabilities and Equity.
It shows what the business owns, what it owes and the owners' claim on the business.
Unlike an Income Statement, which reports financial performance over a period of time, a Balance Sheet shows financial position at a specific date.
Question 2: D. The Accounting Equation
The Balance Sheet is based on the Accounting Equation:
Assets = Liabilities + Equity
This formula shows that everything a business owns or controls is financed through either Liabilities or Equity.
The two sides of the equation must always be equal, which is why it's called a Balance Sheet.
Question 3: A. Current Assets
Current Assets are short-term resources that a business expects to convert into Cash, sell or use up within the next 12 months or its normal operating cycle.
Common examples include Cash, Accounts Receivable, Inventory and Prepaid Expenses.
Non-Current Assets, such as Equipment and Buildings, are generally held for longer-term use.
Question 4: B. Retained Earnings
Capital Contributions represent amounts invested into a business by its owners.
Retained Earnings, on the other hand, represent accumulated profits that have been kept in the business rather than distributed to owners.
Although both form part of Equity, Retained Earnings are not usually classified as a Capital Contribution.
Question 5: C. $79,500
We can calculate Total Assets using the Accounting Equation:
Assets = Liabilities + Equity
Assets = $23,500 + $56,000
Total Assets = $79,500
This is one of the most important formulas in accounting, so it's worth getting comfortable rearranging it to calculate Assets, Liabilities or Equity.
